  • Troubleshooting: Inconsistency with GA4 custom event firing outside of tagassistant preview mode

Hey there, I’ve got a bit of a conundrum on my hands. I’ve been messing around with a custom page_view event that only fires under one specific circumstance. When this happens, I actually get two page_view events.

Now, when I’m in preview mode in GTM or using the tagassistant, everything’s peachy. It fires just fine, even sends out a POST payload.

But here’s the catch – when I exit preview mode, the little bugger just flat out refuses to fire. I’ve tripled-checked that I have the latest published version in GTM up and running and I’ve got top-level admin access. Guess I’m a bit stuck. Anyone have any thoughts?

There may be several reasons causing this issue. The main reason could be that the conditions set for the trigger under GTM’s settings may not be met outside the preview mode. Please ensure that your tag and trigger is set to fire under all conditions that exist in your live environment. Another possible reason could be there’s a discrepancy between the live environment and the preview mode environment (due to ad blockers, firewall, browser settings, or even latency issues). Also, there could be a conflict or redundancy with other created tags. Make sure that priority settings or tag sequencing settings aren’t interfering with the firing of your custom tag. If none of these apply to you, I suggest to get help from GTM support team.

This kind of issue usually boils down to some kind of discrepancy between what’s happening in preview mode versus the live site. You might be running into some sort of conflict with your trigger. Check whether you’ve set your trigger to fire on all pages or just some pages. Also, it’s possible that there’s a problem with the event itself, for example, if it’s dependent on some condition that isn’t being met outside preview mode. Also, check whether there are any other tags firing at the same time that could interfere with your custom page_view tag. If none of these checks yield any issues, then you might want to use the browser’s developer tools to do a more detailed debugging, or consult with a fellow GTM expert for deeper insight.
