Hey there, I’m messing around with Google Tag Manager and trying to set up a virtual pageview for GA4. I based the tag on a button click. I see the tag firing in GTM but I can’t find the pageview under pages. I plan to use this in a funnel. Have a look at the tag configuration I attached. I could really use some help – I’m stuck and I can’t find good resources or examples to reference.

Basically, your current tag will only log a page_view when the history (previous pages visited in the session) changes. If you want to manually log a page view yourself, you can, but you’d need to use a GA4 event tag – the screenshot linked shows an example of how to set it up. It’s also generally better to stop the automatic pageviews that the config tag registers, and instead manually push dataLayer events through your website’s frontend code.

In Google Analytics 4, the virtual pageviews are tracked as events instead of standard pageviews. When you fire a tag for virtual pageview in GA4, it will appear under the “Events” section instead of “Pages”. To find the virtual pageview under the “Events”, navigate to “Reports” > “Engagement” > “Events”. It should be listed there as an event. If you wish to use it in a funnel, you need to create an event first with it and then build the funnel. GA4 is significantly different from Universal Analytics where virtual pageviews could be found in the “Behavior” > “Site Content” > “All Pages” section. Remember that debugging can also be done by using the Real-Time reports or DebugView for more immediate feedback.
