  • Do GA4 Funnel Explorations exclude data with user_id association or implementation?

Hey, so I’m having a little hiccup with Funnel Explorations when the user_id is in play. You can take a look at the screenshots to see how the user counts differ. According to Google Support, the Funnel Exploration doesn’t show any events where a user_id is involved and I assume it’s because they use “TVF” and “Gaia” events but leave out the Gaia(user_id associated) data. I searched for some related docs online but came up dry. So, I’m kinda scratching my head here.

    I’m wondering:

    1. Is it typical for Funnel Exploration to ignore data linked to a user_id?
    2. Are all types of explorations affected by this or just some?
    3. If we want to keep our GA4 property ticking along with the user_id, how can I make sense of the funnel exploration and create graphs to show my team?

Here’s the view from Engagement > Events report and Exploration > Funnel.

Just to add, I cross-checked and found our GA4 property is receiving the right data, and I can see the correct number of events and users in the Engagement > Events report. But the funnel exploration is showing a skimpy number of users for the same time frame. This is beyond me.

The discrepancies you’re experiencing with Funnel Explorations in Google Analytics 4 (GA4) when using user_id could be due to how GA4 filters for unique events. It’s not typical for Funnel Exploration to ignore data linked to user_id. However, according to Google’s development documents, depending on your setup, GA4 may not correctly associate all users with their respective user_id. This is especially true if you’re using both the Gaia and user_id, as GA4’s filters and data parameters could conflict between the two. As such, only certain types of Explorations may be affected, not all. To make sense of your Funnel Exploration while keeping your GA4 property linked to the user_id, it’s important to understand what could be causing these discrepancies. You’ll need to ensure that the user_ids are correctly configured and aren’t conflicting with other data parameters. Once that’s sorted, you’ll be able to accurately visualize your data through Funnel Exploration and create more reliable graphs for your team.

You’re having some trouble with Funnel Explorations in Google Analytics when user_id data comes into play. From your description and screenshots, it seems the user counts shown vary different reports. You were informed by Google Support that Funnel Explorations doesn’t show any events where a user_id is involved, which is quite confusing, considering you would expect all related data to be included. You’re trying to understand If it’s common for Funnel Exploration to exclude data linked with user_id and what kind of impact it may cause to other types of explorations. In addition, you’re interested in knowing how you can effectively use the Funnel Exploration despite this hiccup and create useful graphs for your team. You added that on cross-checking you found the data being received by your Google Analytics 4 (GA4) property is correct however, the number of users shown in the Funnel Exploration for the same period of time is not accurate.
