  • Troubleshooting GA4 Staging Data Tracking Problem

I’m in a bit of a jam trying to get GA4 e-commerce operational for a client. Seems like data doesn’t want to budge from the testing environment to any GA4 property. Everything’s peachy with the production website when it comes to preview and DebugView, but once I switch the preview address to the staging website, GA suddenly stops tracking data.

    • Looks like the container’s installed correctly in the preview — I can spot event triggers in GTM like usual, and opening the tag reveals the right measurement ID.

    • I even whipped up a new testing property to shake things up a little, but no luck — it only logs events from the production site, nada from the staging one.

    • Tag assistant confirms that the container’s good to go on staging.
Got any ideas on what I should keep an eye out for? I’m open to all the help I can get.
      Cheers!

Sure, all this is saying is – See if you’ve got something like AdBlock working or if Firefox is set to block marketing tags. Because in these cases, even though GTM Preview shows that everything’s good to go, the browser might be stopping the data from actually heading out. Another thing to check out is if you have a filter set up in your GA account/property. This could stop the data even before GA has a chance to process it.

It seems like you’ve tried several potential solutions already without success. It might be worth checking if there are differences in the configurations between the production and staging websites. Also, confirm if the staging website can send data to other GA4 properties or not. If it can’t, this may imply there’s an issue with the staging website itself. If it can, it would suggest the data is somehow being filtered before it reaches the GA4 property.
Moreover, ensure that there’s no filter set up in your GA4 that could be blocking incoming data from the staging website. If none of these options seem to solve the issue, then it might be a good idea to try sending hits directly to the GA4 Measurement Protocol API from the staging site to bypass GTM and isolate the issue further. It could also help to check if there are any errors shown in the browser console for the staging site, as these might hint at what could be going wrong with the data transfer.
