  • Troubleshooting live firing issues for Google Analytics 4 tags in Google Tag Manager

Hey everyone, I need a little help with Google Tag Manager. I’ve been using it to trigger some GA4 events alongside some existing UA events. However, the GA4 events are only triggering in the preview mode, and not when the website is live. The UA events don’t seem to be having this issue, they’re triggered in both modes.

I have a GA4 configuration tag set up for this.

    enter image description here

This tag should trigger every time a cmpEvent goes off.

I can see this happening in the preview mode, but once the site goes live, no dice.

I can’t figure out why this is happening. I’ve already made sure the problem isn’t the GTM container (it’s published). Maybe there’s something about GA4 that I’m missing? Does it need a particular sort of consent that I haven’t given? Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

Yeah, this issue can be a thorn in your side, I understand. What I found helpful was to clean up my browser a bit. Clearing browser cookies and history somehow got those elusive GA4 tags to start showing up in the preview debugger. It’s weird, but it worked.

Moreover, give this a go: revert to the version where you initially published the GA4 tags, and preview that particular version.

It can be a bit of trial and error, and the nuances of Google Tag Manager always keep us on our toes, don’t they? But hang in there, you’re right on track!

The person is experiencing difficulty in triggering GA4 events for their website when it goes live. The events work perfectly in the preview mode but not otherwise. The setup for GA4 configuration tag seems to be perfectly fine as it’s triggering every time a cmpEvent goes off. While they have double-checked the Google Tag Manager container and it is published, they suspect the issue could be with GA4 and may have possibly missed giving some sort of consent it requires. They are seeking any advice or solution to this problem.
