I remember we could track mailto clicks as conversions with the Google Tag Manager code and Universal Analytics property. But with Universal Analytics being sunsetted and Google Analytics 4 becoming the new default, I’m not sure if or how we can still do it. Do you know if it is still possible to track mailto clicks as conversions with Google Analytics or Google Ads?

Sure, you can still do it! The actual tracking isn’t tied to GA UA/GA4, but is usually handled separately through GTM. Whether it’s a UA or GA4 event doesn’t really affect the tracking itself. That same principle applies to Google Ads conversions too. So, nothing to worry about, you can still track those mailto clicks as conversions like you used to do.

Yes, you can still track ‘mailto’ clicks as conversions in Google Analytics 4, but the process is a bit different. You’ll need to set up a custom event for the mailto link click in Google Tag Manager and then mark that event as a conversion in Google Analytics 4. Similarly, in Google Ads, you can set up a conversion action for the same.
