  • Resolving GA4 Issue: Duplicate Page View Counts on Initial User Visits

“Hey, I’m having a weird problem with Google Analytics 4. Every time I open a page for the first time, it’s counting two Page_view events instead of one. But if I re-enter the same page, it counts correctly. I’m not using any custom events or props, and I even removed all custom integrations to simplify things. Any advice on how to fix this?”

The issue you’re experiencing might be brought on by Google Analytics 4’s tracking of ‘history change’ events. This is a feature primarily introduced for SPAs (Single Page Applications). However, it’s known for not always working as smoothly as planned. I have a solution that you can try. Simply turn off this option. You can find it under ‘Admin’ and then go to ‘Stream’, ‘Enhanced Measurement Settings’ and ‘Show Advanced Settings’. This might resolve the odd event counting you’re encountering.

It sounds like you’ve got a duplicate tracking code implemented in your website. That can cause double counting. Take a look at your website source code or use a tool like Google Tag Assistant to identify any redundant Google Analytics tags. Remove the duplicates, then check if the issue resolves.
