  • How can I use GA4 ID to track my Google Chrome extension?

Hey there! So, I’ve just whipped up a new Google Chrome extension and I’d love to keep an eye on it using the in-built Google analytics. There’s a spot on my extension dashboard for a “Google analytics ID” (something like UA-XXXX), but all I can do is make new properties on the latest Google Analytics 4 (GA4) which uses a completely different ID format (more like G-XXXX). Just wondering, what should I be popping into the “Google analytics ID” box to keep tabs on my extension through my GA4 property?

Unfortunately, if your tracker has been set up to work with Universal Analytics (UA), you’ll need a UA-XXXX property ID in order to get your tracking data. If you’re wanting to use GA4, you’re going to need to find a tracker that’s compatible with it and can handle the G-XXXX code format.

Unfortunately, the “Google Analytics ID” for Chrome Extensions requires the older UA-XXXX format from Universal Analytics, and can’t directly use the newer GA4 ID format of G-XXXX. Currently, there seems to be no direct solution for using the GA4 ID with Chrome Extensions. What you could do is to set up a new Universal Analytics property as a work-around to get a UA-XXXX ID. Then you can use that UA-XXXX ID in the Chrome extension. It’s also suggested to reach out to Google Support to see if there are updates or further work-arounds to allowing newer GA4 ID usage within Chrome Extensions.
